A semi-precious gemstone, Rainbow Fluorite is famous for its beautiful bands of color, often seen side by side creating a stunning striped look. These bands, called zones are most often seen in purple and green. Less commonly seen are yellow, pink, reddish-orange, blue, black, brown or colorless stones. Because of the colors and its beauty, Rainbow Fluorite (also called fluorspar) is often called “the most colorful mineral in the word.”
The name Fluorite is derived from the Latin word “fluere” meaning “to flow” or “to flux”. This refers to its use as a flux in the steel and aluminum smelting processes. Fluorite gave us the word “fluorescent”, Fluorite crystals were some of the first fluorescent specimens to be studied. Rainbow Fluorite is a soft stone about 4.0 on the Moh hardness scale. But with a little care it is a stunning gemstone! Because it is soft, it has been carved for over 3000 thousand years. The Chinese made it into amulets, talismans and statues. The Ancient Egyptians carved sacred scarabs from the stone and used some of the more colorful pieces on statues of their gods and goddesses. The Blue John caves in Derbyshire, England yield a specimen that was credited with its amazing colors due to a dragon’s breath dancing over the stones. Another folktale tells us that fluorite is the source of all the worlds’ rainbows! Early Romans valued fluorite greatly, considering it an extremely precious stone. They believed that if you drank your wine out of cup or goblet carved out of fluorite, the powers of the stone would ward of drunkenness! This photograph is of the Barber Cup. It was carved in the 1st century AD and is carved out of a single piece of rainbow fluorite. So rare and lovely is this piece, it is now housed in the British Museum.
